The Feminist Shift is dedicated to building knowledge in our community around gender-based issues that inform violence. To support these efforts and important public research projects, we partnered with Data for Good’s Waterloo Region chapter in November 2019 to determine how the organization could better understand poverty, employment, and sexual assault in Waterloo region through a gendered lens.

Over 60 data scientists, analysts, actuaries, and other professionals came together to analyze public datasets related to these issues, along with information released by the Waterloo Regional Police Service. This report forms a summary of the research and analysis, and includes key insights unearthed during the datathon.

Two reports are available for review to the public. The first report acts as the full report, including all the information collected and analyzed through this process. The other report pulls out the sexual violence related data into its own focused report.

Our hope is that this data can help highlight the areas of advancement needed in our community and move the dial towards solutions and build a stronger foundation for women and gender diverse folks to thrive in our community.
